We are frequenting the Mount Edgcumbe more regularly (a couple of times a month). There is an impressive array of Beers and Lager on the Bar, together with a carefully selected collections of wines by the glass. The menu is vast – the main emphasis is based around Steaks and they are simply divine so succulent and cooked to perfection (all our friends who eat Steak just rave about the Steak there. However for a snack lunch we have had Door stop Sandwiches and Baguettes, and a couple of other evenings the Chilli con Carne, Jacket Potatoes, Fish and Chips have certainly satisfied us. The Staff are kind, polite and attentive but not so attentive or push that they are in your face every five minutes. We have just sat, ate and drank at the Mount Edgcumbe at our leisure – not to time constraints other local restaurants in the Town that have to get you in and out ready for the next table to come in! Well done Mount Edgcumbe

Its has been a while since I last visited the once excellent Mt Edgcumbe restaurant, and I can admit it will be a while before I return again.
I always find it such a shame that the venue of many a memorable night should become so apparantly desperate and lost in both their menu and service. I remember just a few years ago the waiting staff being attentive and knowledgable – it seemed they cared and took pride in their work… not so anymore.
I, alongside my girlfriend, and my parents decided to eat at the Mt Edgcumbe on Saturday early evening and had anticipated an excellent meal and enjoyable start to Saturday night, and indeed we enjoyed a drink in the garden before hand and then moved in the the dining area for our meal… I was surprised and disappointed at the poor menu, while I appreciate their claim to be a steak house now – as advertised by the rather cheap and strange bike/billboard on the main road – however you would think that their imagination would stretch a little further than an almost exclusive steak menu.
That said, they did offer Plaice as their special – when the people on the adjacent table asked how big the plaice was, the male waiter very arrogantly snorted at her – You haven’t been here before have you Madam (and with that attitude, she is unlikely to again) her reply was that she had.
I ordered a mixed grill, my mother ordered the fillet steak, my father ordered the seafood platter starter (for 2!), as he didn’t fancy anything on the menu, and was disappointed to be brought a platter for 1, and my girlfriend, being a vegetarian was left with no choice than to order the vegetable crumble, the only vegetarian dish on the very limited menu…
My meal was adequate, while I ordered my meat to be cooked medium rare, it was much over cooked and probably more medium/well done that medium rare, my mothers fillet steak was cooked very nicely, as already mentioned my fathers platter was a splattering of a platter, and the vegetarian dish – quite frankly a curdled, chuggy mess of a meal, with 5 slices of corgette as the ‘veg’…
Perhaps the sachets of condiment was a give away, the Mt Edgcumbe has become a poor version of a Harvester, but not at the prices or the service.
When we complained about the vegetarian meal the waitress, while very pleasant didn’t really know what to do, but apologised, when she returned to collect some more plates from our table we queried whether she would take the meal off our bill, she said she would so what she could – fair enough.
The head waiter, who while avoiding eye contact appeared to challenge very awarkdly why we didn’t speak up earlier and then said he was frustrated as he could have replaced the dish (What with as there were no other vege dishes on the menu I have no idea)… Really, an apology and the removal of this terrible dish from the bill would have been quite enough! Instead it was all a little uncomfortable.
So what can I say really – unless you want disappointment, a slightly narky waiter and a wated meal, go to the Mt Edgcumbe, otherwise head to The Hare, The Beacon, the excellent Sr Francos, even the Royal Wells (yes it was that bad!) go anywhere but this place…

We ate here for the Valentine’s evening menu.
The atmosphere was great, very private and pretty, especially in the cave, and decorated nicely on the red heart theme.
Service was brilliant, very polite and discreet, but always on hand when needed.
The menu choice was good, plenty of dishes to choose from.
Portion sizes satisfying without creating the stuffed feeling.
The food was cooked to perfection, beautifully seasoned to enhance the flavour of the dish. Everything was just spot on with the lamb cutlets and the lobster risotto. The risotto was creamy and full of flavour, the lamb was juicy and tasty.
The deserts were just as good, very smooth and made me want to eat as slowly as possible to enjoy for as long as possible.
I can honestly say I have not had such great food since I was on the QE2! The chef is very talented, and has created a wonderful little-known gem of a restaurant.
What else? The food was very reasonably priced, especially for a valentines special, and the wine was gorgeous.
Will definitely be returning as regularly as we can.

Delightful evening with friends, we chose across the menu – the Sea Bass fillets on Sauteed new Potatoes were superb – the best my friend had tried in years, the Chargrilled Ribeye steak with Fat Chips – Just what the doctor ordered! I had one of the Vegetarian options the Tagliatelle with Cherry Tomatoes, Artichoke and Aubergine absolutely divine.

Price for the meal was good and fair, the wine list was extensive but not disturbingly priced.

    We shall return…
